Our Inspiration
The landscape of piano tuning is changing. Over the last 20 years, this niche trade has seen a steady decline in the amount of, and indeed quality of training courses. With the closure of the last great college at Newark looking imminent, it is now more difficult than ever to train in the art of piano tuning. With that, our plan is in motion to open a brand new course. It will run three days a week - Monday to Wednesday - for 12 months, and will encompass all essential elements of piano tuning and repairs.
Our Proposal
This brand new course will be based in Beccles, Suffolk, at a cost of £12,000 per student for 12 months. We will have an early bird discount available for all students willing to pay the full cost in advance, bringing the price down to £10,000 for the year.
We need a minimum of 8 students to ensure the success of this endeavour, so we encourage anyone who has a keen interest in the industry to contact us as soon as possible to guarantee a place.
The Course
Although the main focus of the course will be learning to tune pianos aurally, we recognise the advantage of ETD tunings which will be incorporated. You will also be taught to restore grand and upright action parts as well as regulation. We will be training you to become efficient, accurate and thorough tuners. We will teach you the skills you need to work for any large piano company in the UK, or to set up your own tuning business.
The Location
We will be based in Beccles, Suffolk. We have a commercial property available for conversion into a tuning school. This site will be primarily dedicated to the school of piano tuning, with access to the school 5 days a week 9am-5pm. It will have a secondary function as a piano shop. Once 8 students are confirmed, the school will be built.

We are committed to giving the industry the course it desperately needs. The building we have selected will have over 3000 square feet dedicated to the tuning school, so there will be at least 12 tuning booths on site with a mixture of upright and grand pianos. We will be able to tailor our style to your individual needs, giving helpful one-to-one advice and monitoring your progress weekly. You will be assessed frequently so you can monitor your own progress for the best chance of success.
Are there any prerequisites?
No. Anybody can apply! A background in music is helpful, but not essential. We do recommend you familiarise yourself with the notes of a piano keyboard before joining us and if possible, how intervals sound, but these elements will be covered in the course too.
What will I need to bring?
Just yourself. Should our plan come to fruition, we will provide you with the tools you need for the duration of the course.
